Variety is the spice of life people, and today we’re doing something a little bit different…
I’m not sure exactly how the idea first came to me, but I thought it would be fun to try some new candy – stuff from all over the world that I’ve never had before or even heard of – and critique it from the perspective of a professional pastry competition judge (which is a roll I have filled on many occasions). Really get in there and analyze the flavor, texture, and overall quality of international junk food. For good measure, I figured I’d record the whole thing and share the results with you. Bizarre, you say? Why yes, in the best way ever.
So for those of you who’ve ever wondered what goes through the mind of a culinary judge on that show you love, or have an odd obsession with foreign confections, or simply like to watch weird and wonderful stuff on the internet…I submit for your enjoyment my candy critic series!
Let me know what candy/cookies I should be trying! Have a favorite from your childhood? I want to know about it!
Cheers – Chef Scott
Nice observations for thinking about proper ratios of components in a dessert.
Must try: next time you (or a friend) goes through Reykjavik, Iceland (Keflavik airport), pick up some chocolate coated licorice candy. it’s a popular flavor combination in that part of the world, and is ‘da bomb’. There are many different brands, some better than others. Since having tried it, I like to dip pieces of soft black licorice (like Australia’s Darrell Lea Soft Eating Licorice, available on Amazon) when I have left-over milk chocolate at the end of a dipping session.
Hi Amy,
Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely give this a try and see if I can find some! The combination of milk chocolate and anise sounds really interesting.
